Many parents are tapping into the growing concern of harmful toxins that they fear may be present in many baby personal care brands. Whether these fears are justified or based in science is an entirely different matter. Consumers have long been worried about dioxins, especially in paper products, as they are a by-product from chlorine bleach alleged to be found in diapers. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), they have been established to be carcinogenic chemicals, and highly toxic. Again, whether they are present in any meaningful quantities is another matter, but the concern is causing some consumers to turn to organic baby products.

Exposure to dioxins can cause adverse skin reactions, immune system impairment, and reproductive concerns. This could pose a greater concern for babies and children due to their small size and weight. Dioxins are just one category of harmful chemicals that are of concern to parents when they purchase personal care products for their children.

Major retailers must keep up with the research and trends if they want to stay afloat. According to Cosmetics Design, “Made Of,” a Brooklyn-based brand that launched in late 2017, has been booming as it strives to find the safest and most natural products for children. Their brand focuses on the transparency of their product, from sourcing, manufacturing, and certification, to gain the trust of their customers.

The trend doesn’t limit itself to North America. European and Asian markets are also on the rise, demanding more natural personal care and cosmetic products. According to a report by Grand View Research, the global personal care market size is projected to reach over USD 25 billion by 2025.

With the recent US retail closure of Toys R Us, there seems to be a gap in the market. Toys R Us used to stock a wide range of baby personal care products in addition to their well-known toys and games. As stores like Walmart and Kroger compete to fill that gap, Target has turned to Made Of’s line of organic baby products, which is set to debut in Target this month.

There seems to be no end to the organic-lifestyle, but those willing to pay the price can sleep easy knowing their children are in good hands.
